Some advises for people with diabetes during Hajj

  • Take sufficient amount of your medications.
  •  Make sure that the medications date is Valid.
  • Keep the name of the treatment that you use or doctor’s prescription, to facilitate getting the -treatment in case your medication is lost or damaged.
  • Ensure that your medical supervisor knows your health status well.
  • Make sure there is proper storage for your medications (away from the sun, light and heat, inside the tent).
  • During travel you must take insulin in special ice bag and make sure that Insulin is not in direct contact with the ice.
    • Do not keep insulin in the car because the vibration and temperature can change its composition.
    • Store the insulin in the refrigerator, not the freezer.
  • Try to choose time (in night for example) to do the rituals of Hajj, also it is advisable to stay away from crowded areas.
  • Do not delay your Meals, take your medication regularly and drink plenty of water .
  • If blood sugar level is within target before starting the rituals, you can take a snack with water to avoid hypoglycemia and dehydration.
  • Ensure that you have hypoglycemia treatment before you leave to do any of Hajj rituals.
  • Make sure to check your blood sugar levels before and after all rituals of Hajj.
  • It is advisable to take rest between the rituals of Hajj and whenever you feel you need it.
  • Choose grilled or boiled food options and avoid fries as these meals with few nutrients and high in calories such as sweets and fast food.
  • Eat a lot of fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables (fresh and cooked), and whole grains.

You can treat hypoglycemia with

  • ½ cup of juice, ½ cup of soft drink, 3 dates, 3 glucose tablet, 3 candies, 1spoon of (sugar, honey or jam).

In case of hyperglycemia

  • Drink more water. Avoid eating carbohydrates in your meal. Avoid extra muscular effort.
  • Consult the supervising doctor in adjusting your medication doses, incase hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia episode is repeated.

Foot Care

  • Wash your feet with soap and water and dry them well, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturizing your feet and avoid the area between the toes. And use an appropriate cotton socks to protect the feet.
  • Check your feet daily make sure there are no cuts or strange signs. If found, don’t ignore it visit the doctor to do a check-up.
  • Avoid walking barefoot or using tight or opened shoes.
  • Trimming your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges according to the toes shape.

Advises for pilgrims with diabetes while standing at Arafat

Ensure to protect yourself from direct sunlight (to Avoid Sun stroke)

  • Carry an Umbrella with you.
  • Sit under a Shade like tree, tent.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Make sure that your location is near a medical station (in case of any emergency)

  • Make sure to carry hypoglycemia treatment (glucose tablet, dates, juice)
  • Ensure to carry your medications with you.
  • Try not to delay your meals.

Avoid crowd to reach top of Arafat (to avoid injuries)

  • In case there is any injuries even if it is advisable minor go to the nearest emergency center.
  • After Arafat and you are at Al-Muzdalefa check your feet carefully for any problem.

Do not forget to check your blood Sugar levels always
